New Albany, Ohio can be found northeast of Columbus 15 miles, or one cup of coffee. As late as 1980 it only had a population of 414 listed residents. Today you will find more than 8,500 residents. The village has exploded. Let’s look and see how that actually happened. The history of New Albany isn’t really glamorous. Founded back in 1837 by Nobel Landon and William Yantis the gentlemen split the land they purchased into lots measuring 50 by 100 feet and then sold those lots to new settlers. The name New Albany came from the fact that many of the original settlers migrated from Albany, New York. The town was incorporated in 1856 with a population of 50 residents and they elected their first mayor. A lumber mill was opened in 1881 in the downtown area and remained open until 2008. Let’s jump ahead to 1980. Still a sleepy village until Les Wexner constructed his mansion, the second largest in the state, in the village. Who is Les Wexner? Les started working in his parents clothing store and then with a $5,000 loan opened his own store 20 miles away called the Limited. He took the brand public in 1969 and now under the L Brands title he has Victoria’ Secret, Pink, Bath and Body Works to name but a few. His presence in the market has driven the economy. Company headquarters now in New Albany include Abercrombie and Fitch, one of his brands, the Commercial Vehicle Group and Bob Evans Farms. Other large employers are Discover Financial Services, Aetna Life Insurance and numerous other regional employers. The city can be considered a suburb of Columbus by some but with the recent surge in growth stands well on its own.

Columbus
