If you drove south on Highway 104, driving right next to the Scioto River, out of Columbus, Ohio and traveled 45 miles you would pull into Chillicothe. This wonderful little city has some rich tradition. First came the Hopewell tradition back in 200 to 500 AD. This unique American culture had trade routes traversing the United States and left earthen mounds in the Scioto River valley that were used for burial and ceremonial purposes. Then it was home to the Shawnee Native Indians. This is where the name originates. Finally, after the American Revolution it became populated by migrants from Virginia and Kentucky. Chillicothe was the first capital of the state from 1803 to 1810 when it was moved to Zanesville. In 1812 it came back to Chillicothe before it was finally moved to Columbus in 1816. It is the county seat for Ross County and the only city in the county. This leads the city of about 22,000 residents to be the hub of economic activity. It has several malls, hospitals and a prison that all employ residents. A large employer and the biggest single business would be the Glatfelter paper mill which was Mead Paper. It has been in operation for over 100 years. At times the mill can create some nasty odors but the residents simply refer to it as the smell of money. Also in town is a branch of Ohio University-Chillicothe. It is a four year public institution with a student body of 2,000 students. Chillicothe is home to the still operating 158 year old Majestic Theatre which has seen Laurel and Hardy and Milton Berle on its stage to name a few. It also hosts the Feast of the Flowering Moon Festival, a Native American festival that draws crowds of 85,000 for three days.

Columbus

Columbus, OH is the capital of the state and now home to over 860,000 residents. It is the 14th largest city in the United States, the second largest in the Midwest behind Chicago and the third largest state capital behind Phoenix and Austin. It sits at the junction of the Scioto River and the Olentangy River and was founded in 1812. Currently home to five Fortune 500 companies it has a very diverse economy based on the industries of education, government, insurance, banking, defense, aviation, food, clothing, logistics, steel, energy, medical research, health care, hospitality, retail and technology. It is also home to one of the largest universities in the United States, The Ohio State University. The city has been recognized numerous times for quality of life. In 2016 Money magazine ranked Columbus as one the 6 Best Big Cities in the country and the best in the Midwest. It has been ranked by BusinessWeek, Forbes, Relocate America and the USA Travel Guide. A great city to live in, a great city to visit. There are many sites and venues to see; such as the nationally ranked Zoo and Aquarium, and too many restaurants to even beginto mention.

Circleville

Directly between Chillicothe and Columbus, 20 miles each way, and also sitting on the banks of the Scioto River, is the county seat for Pickaway County. This small city of 13,000 plus residents dates back to 1810 and gets its name from the Hopewell tradition earthwork. The original layout was a circle. In the 1830s it was changed to a standard grid and all traces of the Hopewell earthwork was destroyed. It is best known today for hosting the Circleville Pumpkin Show which has been an annual festival since 1903.

Washington Court House

Located northwest of Chillicothe, 40 miles southwest of Columbus and directly between Columbus and Cincinnati, Washington Court House is the county seat for Fayette County and has a population of around 14,000 residents. The town dates back to 1810 with a family of settlers coming from Pennsylvania. In 1833 the town had a printing office, seven stores, two taverns, two grocery stores, a schoolhouse, a meeting house and 70 homes. Today you will notice that the grid system is not the typical east-west, north-south design, but cocked 45 degrees. This was done so the courthouse, in the town square, could get sun light year round, summer and winter.

Jackson

75 miles due south of Columbus and 30 miles south of Chillicothe is Jackson, Ohio. Established in 1817 it was named after Andrew Jackson, hero of the War of 1812. By 1840 it only had 297 inhabitants and contained four churches, seven stores, and one newspaper office. Then it started growing over the next 40 years. It was up to over 3,000 residents in 1880. The largest businesses were the Star Furnace Company and the Globe Iron Company. Today Jackson has a population of over 6,000 and many residents find employment at a General Mills plant in nearby Wellston.

Wellston

The origination of Wellston revolves around the discovery of coal. The town was laid out in 1873, incorporated in 1876 with only 152 residents and in 1887 it had a population of 5,000. It was a mining and manufacturing center. There were 12 mine shafts for coal and a Nail Mill Company working steel and iron. These two industries employed over 2,000 men. Through the years numerous business interests have passed through Wellston. Horse collars and pads, screw manufacturing, cigar vending machines, trousers and plastics. It is now a quiet town with a General Mills plant and a population of around 6,000 residents.

Greenfield

The state law of Ohio says that if the population is under 5,000 then the community is deemed a village. With a population of 4,600 Greenfield  is now a large village located 50 miles southwest of Columbus and 20 miles due west of Chillicothe. The town was founded in 1799 and was named for the green fields that surround it. Greenfield  is a very quiet village with some shuttered villages. It is the smallest town in the country to own its own rail line. It bought the 29 miles of rail to keep the tracks operational for their local manufacturing industry.
