Treating Ongoing Periodontal Problems

This condition can cause bad breath, mouth bleeding, and tooth loss. Fortunately, it is possible to treat ongoing gum problems by following a strong oral care routine.

How Gum Disease Develops. Periodontal disease commonly develops when you are not brushing or flossing properly. Bacteria is allowed to build in the mouth, which creates a film on teeth. As the bacteria spreads, gums become inflamed. Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, is the first sign of gum disease. You may also notice redness or bleeding when you brush as well. Although early gum disease is not painful, it can lead to extreme mouth damage.

Prolonged Gum Problems. If gingivitis is not treated, infection and inflammation penetrate tissues that support your teeth. Your gums will start pulling away, which provides even more space for bacteria to invade. This condition is known as periodontitis. As time progresses and deep pockets form, bone may begin to deteriorate, and your teeth may become loose.

Treating Periodontal Disease. After being diagnosed with gum disease, your periodontist may perform a special deep cleaning procedure. This “scaling or root planing” removes plaque and tartar at the root of a tooth, helps gum tissue heal, and shrinks pockets. If pockets are extremely deep, bone may have been lost. In this case, surgery may be necessary to prevent tooth loss.

Preventing Further Gum Problems. According to The American Dental Association, following a few tips will prevent further gum problems. For example, it is essential to brush and floss each day and use an antiseptic rinse. Also, you should visit your dentist for regular cleaning and examinations. Bad habits, including smoking, are known to cause gum disease, so it is wise to stop using cigarettes as well.
