Many denture wearers we meet don’t like to smile. When we first meet with a patient, it is our mission to make them smile and show that they can be comfortable in a dental environment. When we can get a patient to smile, it opens their eyes up to what they have been missing. Sometimes that doesn’t happen until they leave our Columbus, Ohio office with dental implants, and then you can’t stop them from smiling!
Dental Implant Patient Concerns
Fear of taking dentures and teeth in and out in front of a spouse is a big fear of many of our patients. They want something permanent in their mouth that they don’t have to remove to eat, sleep, clean, etc. Some denture wearers will end up leaving their dentures in all night, which is not good for your gums. The skin needs to breath to stay healthy.
Pain is another major concern of people thinking about dental implants and there is a perception that dental implants hurt. We can assure you that dental implants do not hurt or cause pain. We have had 90-year-old patients who experience no pain during or after the procedure and never require pain medication.
Recently, we met an 88-year-old patient in Columbus, Ohio who had worn dentures his whole life. He had grown tired of wearing them and wasn’t happy. He was looking for something he wouldn’t have to take in and out and would make eating food easier. This patient came to us and asked for dental implant options. We presented a hybrid denture to him that attaches to several implants and cannot be removed. He was very interested in the hybrid denture and within 2 weeks had his implants and teeth in. When he returned to our office for a post-op appointment, he said that it was a great experience and that he had no pain. This patient had 10 implants, bone grafting and tissue grafting and experienced no pain whatsoever and took no pain pills. His only question was, “why did I wait so long!” It was a life altering procedure for him.
New Dental Implant Technology
Dentistry is such a fascinating field right now because it is technology driven. There are so many options we can give to patients now that we couldn’t just 5 years ago. Because of the surfaces of implants and ability to use multiple implants to replace teeth with dentures, we can give patients teeth immediately if they want. Dental implants are now minimally invasive, have low down time and, in many cases, don’t even involve an incision.
Where to Start and Choosing A Periodontist
Patients should do their homework before choosing a Periodontist. You can start by asking your general dentist for a recommendation. Then call the Periodontic Specialist for a consultation to meet with them and their team. This way you know you are choosing someone your dentist would go to themselves, and begin to form a relationship with the Periodontist so you are comfortable before any procedures happen.
Periodontal Patients Talk About Getting Dental Implants
“Everything worked in a way I thought it was going to work and I felt comfortable. There is a human element that he [Dr. Jason Stoner] brings to the table and that is important for developing trust.”
“I don’t have to worry about what I eat or about breaking something. This tooth is as strong as a natural tooth and it feels as strong. It has really changed my life. I have better gums and better health because of that.”
